"What is a print? Some experts of printmaking say that to make a print you need a design, a matrix (ie. something that you print from, such as a copper etching plate), and finally, something to print on. During the spring semester, the Topics in Printmaking students explored these ideas of "print" as well as the related notions of place and context in which an artwork exists. The works presented here are the results of the project Prints in the Public Place. Each student designed a temporary piece of art to be installed in the city. Using different materials, forms and subject matter, the students explored a variety of issues and content. This opportunity was offered through the Art in the Park program and was sponsored by the Portland Parks and Recreation Department. Thanks are directed towards the Student Art Review Committee and especially to Ted Musgrave for their patience and guidance in this project."
